Hummel Porcelain collectible figurines are truly an amazing assortment of spiritual and unique collectible figurines based upon the artwork by a German nun named Maria Innocentia Hummel (commonly abbreviated and trademarked as M.I. Hummel)
The artwork of Sister Maria was discovered when the porcelain maker Franz Goebel, that happened to be producing porcelain at a factory next to the community of Oeslauby in Germany in 1876. This manufacturer would eventually end up being carried into the twentieth century due to the endeavors of Franz's eldest son William, who made use of the U . S . wealth and market to increase sales and profits.
In the early part of the 20th century, specifically during the 1930's, that Frank realized that the people needed a product that would renew their faith in the innocence of childhood. It was during this time of political unrest that Franz relied heavily on the artwork from H.I Hummel and allowed him to produce the collectible figurines that conveyed the innocence he desired. Prior to making Sister Hummel's artwork into figurines, her drawings of children in scenes filled with laughter and joy had been distributed as art cards.
Franz took these art cards and created a set of figurines that were based on the amazing images that were drawn on each of them. Once he had his initial clay versions of the figurines complete he traveled to the Convent of Siessen, where he sought the approval of Sister Hummel to move forward with the first set of collectible figurines. Sister Hummel approved of the figurines and granted Goebel exclusive rights to create ceramic figurines based off of her drawings. From that day until her death, Sister Hummel personally approved each figurine before it went into production. After her death Goebel honored the original agreement and continued to produce collectible figurines until 2008 when Goebel was hit hard by the declining economy and ceased production on October 31st.
The agreement between Sister M.I. Hummel and Goebel may no longer exist, but all is not lost because in February of 2009, production of Hummel figurines has resumed in the original production facility in Rodental after the manufacturer company Rödental GmbH took over all of the production rights and facilities shut down by Goebel. The Rödental GmbH company will focus more on quality over quantity of products and with a much smaller work force of around 30 employees, most of whom are former Goebel employees, have taken the line of collectible figurines back to its roots.
